What is Racism?
Racism is not just about hatred and anger directed at another person because of his or her race. Racism is also subtle and can be found in many places that claim to be without prejudice. In recent years sociologists have come to define racism as: a system of advantages based on race. This definition includes all of the subtleties and nuances of the racial discrimination that are embedded in our culture, speech, neighborhoods and even our constitution.
What does this mean?
Saying "a system of advantages based on race" is one thing, but actually seeing racism in everyday life is another. Racism can be as overt as a nasty look or hate crime, or as subtle as a pink colored crayon called "flesh". In the morning, on your way to work, try to see how many times you subconsciously react to someone’s race. You may find that it happens more often than you may be comfortable with. Racism is uncomfortable, change can be difficult, and no one is perfect. We can all benefit from trying a few more good things every day, and working to change the status quo.
How do I help?
The simple answer is: change the status quo. When you have a conversation, you are having a transaction. The parties involved each bring a set of values and interests as well as experiences to the table. This means that the topics of conversation have to be socially agreed upon to be appropriate and acceptable. The way this is determined is by both parties continuing to accept the subjects or at least not say anything to object. Often, this leads to discomfort when one of the parties does not share a value with the other. It is this crucial moment that determines the social norms of the group.
When this awkward moment of mounting discomfort arrives, the uncomfortable party has the opportunity to reject the topic as a value that is not shared or not wanted. Racism can be rejected on a daily basis. The more you say "That is not an appropriate topic. Racism is wrong" the more you contribute to changing the status quo. It really is that simple. All you have to do is stand up and say something.
However, simple does not mean easy. You may find that even though the steps are few, and the method plain, the amount of courage it takes to tell a loved one to stop a racist behavior can be enormous. This is why it is so difficult for so many people. Rest assured though, you are not alone. Radio Freedom Underground is a vast network of supporters who all understand just how much it takes to change the world, one person at a time. You are not alone; we are here to help you and to guide you.
